Statistics Programs
Program Purpose
Programs in the Statistics Department empower students with foundations in probability theory, statistical inference, and calculus so they are equipped with the skills to fit statistical and machine learning models to complex datasets and communicate technical findings to diverse audiences. These various pathways-ranging from specialized undergraduate emphases to advanced graduate research-prepare graduates for high-impact professional careers and entrance into premier doctoral programs.
- Data Analytics: This program provides a strong foundation in statistics and programming paired with a business background in finance, marketing, or accounting, allowing students to earn industry micro-certifications such as AWS or Tableau.
- Statistical Science: This emphasis focuses on deep academic preparation including advanced statistical modeling and mathematics and is designed to qualify students for entry into top-tier graduate programs (Masters and/or PhD) in the field of statistics.
- Biostatistics: This pathway specializes in applying statistical methods to the life sciences, combining rigorous mathematical training with coursework in biology and epidemiology to prepare students for graduate study in biostatistics or careers in the health field.
- Data Science Emphasis: This emphasis prioritizes a robust computing foundation, training students to acquire, clean, and store a wide variety of data types while understanding modern data workflows and pipelines for implementing modern machine and deep learning algorithms.
- Interdisciplinary Data Science: This interdisciplinary major provides an expansive education in data science practice, combining statistics and computer science with specialized electives in physics, economics, and mathematics to solve novel problems at the intersection of these important fields.
- Master of Science (MS): This immersive, cohort-based program equips students with a deep theoretical and modeling foundation including a culminating project. Graduates go on to be professional Data Scientists and Statisticians or matriculate in top PhD programs.
